Tikkie, Tania, Chloe, Anders and Joyce

Tikvah
is the Hebrew word for hope. Tikkie
is an 8-year-old Norwegian Elkhound.
Tikkie
came to us from a pet store at 2 mos. old.
Within a month she was limping on 3 legs.
X-rays showed misplaced kneecaps and ruptured cartilage in her back legs,
along with arthritis. I believe
Tikkie picked us out in the pet shop because she knew we would help her and not
put her down. Surgery helped her
worst leg and good vet care gave her years of good activity.
Tikkie has a very outgoing personality and will do whatever I ask her to
do. She is a “natural” at
therapy dog work
and knows just how to visit and comfort elderly people.
She is particularly good with people who must stay in bed.
My name is Joyce Papciak and I am the present coordinator of Paws With
Patience Pet Therapy Group. I came
to “Paws with Patience” about 10 years ago when we were under the leadership
or Bill Kurtz, our founder. When
Bill became too ill to continue his position, I took over because I thoroughly
approve of the benefit of the good a therapy dog can do for a person in need.
It is wonderful to see smiles on faces that usually are swallowed up in
sadness. It is also wonderful to
see benefit to the health of someone brought to them by a therapy dog.
Even if we are tired or “blue” when you give of yourself and your
dog, you are the receiver of great blessings.
This is a special way to give back to the community in a service really
worthwhile.
Tania came to us at the age of 5. She is now 8 years
old. She came carrying the baggage of abuse. With Loving care from
our
vet and myself and obedience classes, she has become a wonderful therapy
dog. She is a friend to all dogs as well as people. Her expression
is always happy - - probably a big 'thank you' for rescuing her from an awful
condition. Her only hang-up is a food obsession and grabbing, probably due
to food withdrawn where she came from. The residents of the homes she
visits are always sympathetic and interested in Tania's background and their
hearts go out to her. Her response is a happy, loving look from those
soulful eyes.
Hi, My name is Chloe.
It used to be Chewy, because my former owner thought I looked like
Chebacca on Star Wars. He moved to
a house with a small yard and could not keep me.
He knew Joyce and asked if she could keep me.
At first I was sad. I missed
him, but now my life has a whole new meaning.
I love Joyce. She is
teaching me to be a therapy dog, whatever that is?
I know people love my unusual blue eyes and I get lots of pats.
Although I ‘m still trying to figure out what to do in nursing homes, I
get a sense that I have done something quite worthwhile because I feel good in
my doggie heart.
Joyce inherited Chloe 1 year ago and is now taking her to
obedience classes. She’s
learning! Chloe is 3 years old and is an Airdale/Husky mix.
My name is Anders (Andy). I used to live with my breeder but when she
said I needed to help someone, my Elkhound servant
heart leaped for joy. I came to live with Joyce in December 1993 at the age of
15 mos. I love Tikkie and she really needs help with all she does. I
am so happy when we go visiting nursing homes. I am especially happy (see
my smile) when we read to the kids!
